Broadcasting, Inclusivity, and Leadership
The vision was audacious: to create Ireland’s first LGBT-themed radio station, a platform that would resonate with and empower the community. The challenge was multi-fold: assemble a dedicated team, secure funding, and navigate the logistical intricacies of broadcasting live from a mobile platform.
Method
Orchestrating Inclusion: The OpenFM Initiative
Leveraging my background in leadership and project management, I collaborated closely with Emma, a former student and co-founder Liam, to spearhead this monumental project. We embarked on a rigorous 9-month campaign to meticulously curate a team of 100+ volunteers who shared our passion for meaningful communication.
Cultivating Resilience and Team Synergy
Through this journey, I experienced profound personal growth, harnessing resilience and strategic leadership to drive the initiative. The project became a practical leadership laboratory, with each challenge offering invaluable lessons in team-building, vision alignment, and adaptive leadership.
Triumph on the Airwaves
OpenFM made history, not only by broadcasting live for 24 hours a ay for 30 days, but also by innovatively airing from a double-decker bus during Dublin’s Pride Parade. This unprecedented venture amplified voices, transformed perceptions, and set a precedent for community-led initiatives.
What I Learned
OpenFM’s success underscored the essence of visionary leadership and the impact of a united team with a shared mission. It stands as a testament to the power of belief and the transformative potential of leadership in action.
